This 2nd iron cross comes with the full issue 30cm ribbon (black, white and red), which will suffice for both hanging and to attach ribbon to the uniform. The cross itself is constructed as a single-piece, measuring 44mm.
The Iron Cross 2nd class is available with it's appropriately marked presentation envelope, in blue-gray shade, stamped "Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse 1939".This is being offered as a complete set, or medal and ribbon on their own.
The Iron Cross 2nd Class was a continuation of the famous Prussian medal introduced in 1813 (shown on reverse of the cross). This version is the one that was re-introduced in 1939 (year shown on the obverse).
The official criteria for the award was a single act of bravery in the face of the enemy, or actions that were clearly above and beyond the call of duty. However, in later years of the war, this award was given more liberally and is estimated that 5 million 2nd class iron crosses were awarded until the end of the war.
